hotmail users receive email as (unknown)?

I almost want to answer - who cares, but unfortunately
my unix users do...

When sending an email from a shell account with the mail
command or pine, or generated from a script,
emails sent to a hotmail.com account show up
incorrectly on the hotmail website.
Their website shows the email as (unknown)
and when opened it sometimes shows the
header information
inside the subject.

grrrrr... most likely the problem is a hotmail problem...

but if I use say, outlook express then use the same
openbsd box for smtp relay the email shows up correctly
on hotmail.com

This problem happens on the openbsd 3.1 and 3.0 boxes,
but the openbsd 2.9 box doesn't.
and to my knowledge no other receivers of email
are having problems resolving the headers
(this email for example appears otay?)

Possibly I've made some custom change to sendmail
or another which I will continue to explore,
but I post this email in hope/chance someone on this
list has seen this and knows the answer.
