xircom combo card modem problems

hello,

i am having problems setting up my modem.
the modem is a xircom creditcard combo
identified at pccom3 (see the dmesg below).
the ethernet card part works ok, but i cannot
get it answer my AT commands.

i've tried all cua0's and tty0's, only cua03 reacted as
`entering terminal mode'.

i also tried turning off CTS/CTR, and setting accmap 000a0000.

one more thing, the phone cable is not yet connected,
i am not near a phone plug.  nevertheless the modem
should answer shouldn't it?

i had an external modem before connected to com1,
never had problems with it.  any suggestions?
