oh. that explains why my two attempts so far to port the lkm to 3.1,
running X 4.20 resulted in bad things happening ... :') but the lkm was
very stable when running on 2.9, which is good.

the adaption to 3.1 has been done, and works well.

there are still a few bugs in the code, as reported on this list
a couple of weeks ago, including problems with vt switching, which
generally result in screen corruption and/or lockups. but it
is possible to use an i810e at 16bpp in 1600x1200.
