Additional info:

I replaced the original NIC (3COM 3C589D PCMCIA) with
another (3COM 3CCE589ET PCMCIA) that also happens to
use the 'ep' driver.

I am still having the same problem - card works fine when booted
from the floppy, doesn't seem to hear anything from the network
(such as dhcp responses) when booted from hard disk.

If anyone has ANY ideas where to go with this, please speak up.
I'm under a bit of pressure here to resolve this but not getting far.
