No, it is NO large-disc problem... BIOS simply can't boot
from a drive other than &h80.

Your problem is: you tried to be too clever. But thanks a lot
you showed me this is working.

Now, what you want, is:
not
| machine boot wd1a
but
| boot wd1a

simple, eh?

If something goes wrong, you specify an alternate kernel with
| boot wd1a:/bsd.rd
or bsd.old or whatever.
