Sorry I can't help much except to say:

#1 - I've had success booting off of AIC-7899W on-board controllers on a SuperMicro motherboard.  No problems.

#2 - BUT... the AIC-7899W controller (ahc) has been a problem, in general, with other things.  We're having intermittent issues with total crashes when copying between two SCSI drives on one controller.  Though this may be really disappointing, I wouldn't depend on that onboard SCSI for a live server just yet, unless you've put it through a ton of tests.
