i was wondering about this as well, though not enough to check it out as
far as the other guy - killing the configure and trying again a few times
got it to run through in my case; a couple times it would hang on that
command, then on the 3rd or 4th try it would go through.
Apache src distributions of 1.3.9, 1.3.14, 1.3.20, 1.3.22, 1.3.24 and
1.3.26 all ship with configure trying `$TAR --version 2>/dev/null`, though
apache 1.3.1 doesn't. dont know about other src versions, those are only
the ones i have lying around.
