which card model? i doubt it's the card as i have a geforce2 mx400 which
is certainly not the fastest card. it runs x at 1920x1440 without
problems.

sluggish isn't very descriptive.

there's a long list of possible hardware bottlenecks such as ram, cpu,
hard drive controller, etc. a dmesg would certainly help.

and of course the software matters a lot. kde/gnome are too big for
their own good IMHO. i use windowmaker and install the libs for both so
i can still use software that's based on both.
