PPP problems connecting...

Here comes another newbie with a ppp problem...

I can connect to my ISP using the following:
$ppp
ppp on>set device /dev/cua03
ppp on>set speed 115200
ppp on>set authname *****
ppp on>set authkey *****
ppp on>term
at OK
atm0
OK
atdt0000000

<--- snip --->

here's my problem at this point I seem to connect with my ISP but I get
this

Ascend Pipeline Terminal Server ****
System Password:

This isn't such a big deal I just ~P and give it a few seconds
Ppp on>
PPp on>
PPP on>add default HISADDR

I can put all these options in my ppp.conf file and of course it doesn't
work with...
$ppp -auto provider

any clues??
