I have upgraded to apache 1.3.26 and thought that would fix the problem...
The main server just froze, I rebooted it the hard way and after checking
the logs I could see plenty of:

request failed: erroneous characters after protocol string

oh.
while i was writting this, just got a

panic: malloc: out of space in kmem_map

a 'ps' would show PLENTY of 'httpd' way above the limit fixed in httpd.conf,
I don't know how to paste the 'trace' thought  =/
