/etc/rc terminates abnormally

I am having troubles with my /etc/rc or maybe my /etc/rc.local. I am
running 3.0 and this is the first time in a long while where we've had
any problems with our installation.

I noticed that things were amiss because it's my firewall machine at
home but I'm at university. I couldn't log (ssh) into box but all httpd
and pf and nat were working (I phoned home to ask). When I got home I
found out that the /etc/rc had terminated right after httpd and before
sshd.

I tried reboot the machine a few time and making changes to the /etc/rc
to find out where it crashes but apparently it crashes in different
place. It has crashed in my /etc/rc.local and also it has crashed before
and after sshd runs.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? I have since moved sshd
higher up in the /etc/rc to ensure that I can always login remotely.
