Please wrap your lines.

You could simply <ctrl>+<alt>+<Fnum> to switch to a different virtual
terminal. When the machine boots, you're on ttyC0 (reached with ctrl+alt+F1),
and when xdm starts, you're on the output reached with ctrl+alt+F5. So if xdm
is running and you're having errors, just ctrl+alt+F2 to bring up ttyC1 and
login normally. If you don't have access to any of your virtual terminals,
you probably have some other serious problem and should boot single-user mode
(enter '-s' at the boot> prompt) to fix it.

A trip through the FAQ or Google would have revealed this, of course.
