First, if the goal is to zero  the start of the drive, just use dd
and /dev/zero against the raw disk  device. Let it go for a second
or so before  interrupting it and you've more than  blown away the
MBR.

If you  want a DOS bootdisk--and  the only reason you  should need
one  is to  run something  like  a BIOS  flash utility--check  out
places like bootdisk.com.

However,  I'd still  worry about  that ``Did  this disk  ever boot
OpenBSD?' bit. I'd run some  sort of disk-checking utility. If you
can't get  a bootable  floppy image from  the manufacturer  of the
drive, you  can get one  from IBM that  should work with  most any
drive. Make sure  the drive is actually  functional before banging
your head against the wall too many times.
