Re: Is it my imagination?
Hmmm. Unless I'm mistaken, you guys are completely misunderstanding me. It
may be partially my fault. I didn't mention that after a few tries, I DID
download the release version of the Boot CD, but it made no difference and
should not have, since it grabbed its tgz files from the very same directory
as the 3-days-prior snapshot was set up to do, /pub/OpenBSD/3.3/i386. In any
case, the *release* kernel seemed to change dates in between the time I first
began the process and about a week later, when it became a month older; I
compared the kernel date on one of my non-working 3.3 builds with the kernel
date on a working 3.3 build several days later.
I have not touched the snapshot machine since I built it, by the way, in
case I haven't made that clear. Works great.
To reiterate:
1. I downloaded cd33.iso from a few different sources and burned copies.
2. I did several FTP installs with several different machines known to
work with previous OpenBSD versions, including the one I'd built with the
snapshot, but *with a blank drive* (and switched back to the working drive
afterwards).
3. None of the installs worked with either SCSI or ATA drives. All failed
on reboot with "Inappropriate file type or format" UNTIL
4. I built a machine and then ftp'd the working pre-release kernel over
before rebooting after the install. So the pre-release kernel booted, the
release kernel didn't, therefore the release kernel *was* corrupt.
Have I got the word "snapshot" confused with "pre-release"? One of the
readme files in the release I'm talking about said that it was the last
snapshot before the official release.
