...do you mean a card in ad-hoc mode acting as an "access point" ?
...if so, you'll *probably* need a card that has external antenna support.
i don't know how an(4) is in OpenBSD, but you for the money, a used Cisco
350 card w/ external antenna is the absolute best card for the money
available on the market.
no comments on the security aspects of this.
