/mnt was unmounted improperly

I've got a 3.3 release system that always complains that /mnt was 
improperly unmounted
when starting up. my partitions are /,/tmp,/var. if I delete the /mnt 
dir, I still get the
error. happens with shutdown -h or -hp. the filesystem check on the 
root partition
is always okay.
