Ah so! Thanks to you both. I (finally) saw the reference to /mnt when
I re-tried (U)pgrade.

Here's what I did to "fix" the problem: 

# cd /mnt/usr
# rm -rdf *
# cd /
# exit

Afterward, the (U)pgrade re-started. 

Things seem to be back to normal now... the (U)pgrade completed with
no further complaints, and after a reboot everything appears to be as
it was before I bagged /usr.
