usb mouse detected but not working

I've got a ps/2 mouse hooked up to a ps/2 to usb adapter that
appears to be detected fine (dmesg below) but does not work --
wsmoused and X both don't tell me there's any problem, but I
move the mouse and nothing happens....wsmoused is run without
any arguments, and X is setup with protocol wsmouse, device
/dev/wsmouse.  I am running the latest snapshot (Sept 17).

I've hooked it up to another machine and it worked fine, so I
imagine I must just be missing something...
Any suggestions on how to fix this or track down the problem
are appreciated.
