not too many details...such as, what version of OpenBSD, etc.
A lot of machines could be called "a Compaq Server".
Wild guess with what you have provided, though:
IF running OpenBSD 3.3, probably a combination of the following two
problems:

http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq4.html#cpq16m
i.e., the second problem causes you to experience the first.
3.4 and recent 3.4-beta snapshots has the "SmallRAM" workaround in the
install scripts already (yay!), though you still will have the Compaq
RAM issue. Workaround works well, however..
