You will need to do make the indicated /etc/boot.conf changes after
install.

I don't know that I was very clear on this part --
if you "fix" the memory issue at the "boot>" prompt, you don't have to
worry about about the "SmallRAM" problem (as there won't be one!).

The problem is the BIOS and /boot don't talk well on the Compaq, and
/boot gets the wrong answer of how much memory is in the system to
report to the kernel.  This impacts both the install and "production"
kernel, so yes, you have to either keep making the change at the
"boot>" prompt or (better) create an /etc/boot.conf file with that
line in it, and you won't have to worry about it again until you
reinstall (at which point, you will forget all about the problem. 
Been there, done that. 8)

oh, another thing...if you rely on the 3.4 "Activate swap during
install" feature, the making of the device nodes will take some
serious time, but you will see, and probably hear, a lot of activity
on your hard disk as the swapping starts.
