that's a program hitting its file descriptor limit.  see man 
login.conf/limit.

you don't mention what a "large number" is.  it could be six, in which 
case something is setup wrong (low limits) or it could be a million, in 
which case you should probably reevaluate your solution, instead of trying 
to tweak the kernel.
