I had the same problem installing 3.3 on a machine w. 16MB ram.  This is
addressed in the 'common installation problems' section of the FAQ.
Making device nodes runs out of ram.  The solution is to drop to
shell in the installer just before doing this and
manually mount the swap partition before continuing.
