nic initialization

I have just installed openbsd 3.4 on my laptop. It's an HP Omnibook XE3.
I managed to configure XFree86, so far.
My NIC has a strange behaviour:
If I try to boot normaly the system freezes at the network initialization.
But if I boot in single user, then I can configure the nic (dc0) without
any problems by using ifconfig.
If instead I do sh -x /etc/netstart it freezes at ifstart dc0.
What may be the problem? I see from dmesg that it assigns irq 11 to dc0
and also to the PCI-CardBus cbb0 and cbb1.
Is there any simple way to change this?

And another question please:
How can I turn down the volume level of the system bell, cause it sounds
at its maximum, either in X or in console.
