pppoe is, as you say limited to dsl and wireless authentication.
Ive never seen it done with a cablemodem, unless something's changed
recently.

As of 2002 (when I moved out), Comcast/Baltimore did not use PPPoE,
instead opting for the "phone in your cablemodem's MAC address and we'll
turn on the signal" DOCSIS method. I may be wrong, but I think PPPoE is
limited to the xDSL world.
