Hello,
I agree with what you say. But I wouldn't give much
attention to European newspapers and their coverage of
the computer security debate (or ANY newspapers, for
that matter). Journalists are inconceivably ignornant
and understand little to nothing about science,
software, or the internet. "Soundbites" are their
trade - IMO it would be wise to remember that.
Europe especially is bad at this time. You can
regularly read there that Linux is as big as the
Second Coming. Absolutely NONE of the challenges of
*NIX have been solved by Linux (the need to
_understand_ what you are doing is as great as ever -
meaning, nearly nothing about it is Plug-and-Play).
Additionally, the "incoherent" (to quote someone else
of this list) nature of Linux docs bodes poorly for
the future of *NIX as a whole. But that doesn't stop
the "journalists" from getting a quote from their frat
friend from college. Or from the media whores like
Stallman.
Don't get me wrong - your point about liability is
well made. But when a group needs a newspaper to
report it for them, it's probably hype.
best,
