I'm sorry, but the fact that you have a "crappy" network-department
has nothing to do with this discussion. Company policy has nothing
to do with wether autoneg works or not...

For the record, take cheap equipment and autoneg normally works fine,
exceptions do always exist. Take expensive equipment, manageable and
the option you never needed to use and which didn't exist on the
cheap stuff suddenly becomes necessary.

And yes, most cases where autoneg gives you headaches is when some
wannabe net-tech starts fumbling around with it.

It's either autoneg on both sides or both sides fixed. And it's only
if you have 100BaseTX.
With fiber, media-converters etc. one has to be very carefull with
port settings.
