Newcomer's question about XF4 compilation

I belive that the x*.tgz installation sets are from the
compilation of the XF4.tar.gz.

When the 012 patch came out
for 3.4 I downloaded the XF4.tar.gz, the ports.tar.gz , unpacked
them, applied the patch , run # cd /usr/XF4 && make build and the
make was done without any error. But the X did not run any more.

Then I deleted /usr/XF4, unpacked it again, in this case i didnt
applied the patch, maked build again, but nothing changed.

I have already unpacked the install sets again and lost the XF86 log
(sorry) and got the X working..

My question is :Was I mistaken when i said the x*.tgz install sets
were the compiled form of XF4.tar.gz? If it is so, why is the
difference between the officially compiled and own compiled version?
