Unfortunately I think you hit the nail on the head.  Let me
illustrate with Berners-Lee, who developed the www concept and
initial iterations, while paid a very comfortable salary at CERN,
tax free I might add, and now the same guy, it seems, wishes that
he patented the web so that he would be a lot richer.  It is more
than ego, it is greed for more control, more power and more money.
