Secure data deletion makes the rounds once or twice a year; srm has been
mentioned before.
To summarize: how do you know all blocks are being overwritten (bad blocks
on disks may be reassigned), rm(1) has a -P flag which may be good enough
for your needs, yes there are mil specs for this kind of thing but who
cares, you're really looking for encrypted fs's (vnd(4) can do this), you
really want to melt that metal down.
