adding tun devices as interfaces

I am running 3.4 release.
I want to use about 8 tun interfaces and I see that /dev/tun0-3 exist
as standard.
MAKEDEV helps me create more. Fine.

ifconfig only shows tun0 and tun1

I Googled on adding tun devices but didn't find anything useful except
what I knew about creating the /dev entries.

Grepping on /etc didn't let me see where tun0 and 1 were configured so
that I see them in ifconfig output but tun2&3 miss out.

Somewhere there is a script at startup I'm sure but man tun and man
netstart led me to a blank.

It has been close to 40C most days here lately and the nights didn't
get cool enough for good sleep for at least a week. What am I not
seeing through the bleary eyes?

TIA for any pointer. I'm going to drop off any tick so I'll look in the
morning....
