Installing Programs

I want to install MPlayer, but it has some dependencies: xfree86-4.2.1, 
freetype-2.1.2 and unzip-5.50. I can download these files, but once I 
extract them, I try and do a ./configure and a make in the folder, but I 
can't get them installed. What should I do?
