Install & Run

1) I have Mplayer in files with the .tar.gz. and .tar.bz2. I can get them 
unzipped, and untarred, but I can't get the program to install or run. How 
do I install, and once installed, how do I run it?

2) I have KDE in .gz files and I use pkg_add to install them. Once they are 
all installed, how would I load KDE?
