I've seen some really dead (hardware, or software) machines return pings.
Aparently all that they need to do that is have power, and have once
before, init's the NIC's .
I suspect a reboot is in order, but the console messages will be
"They that would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve
neither liberty nor safety."
