There are some truly bizarre NICs out there.  

A friend was evaluating a NIC with a complete firewall embedded  and
configuration from a centralized management console.  I forget the
manufacturer. It was for an organization where neither the user, nor the
local admin was completely trusted.

Really strange things happen in environments where highly classified 
information is processed.
