i'm not so sure that is correct, actually - unless u're talking about
a Re-implementation of the project. Surely the GPL forces derivations
to be GPL-based as well? Or does this restriction not apply for the
copyright owners (i think this should be true, but somebody check me
on this)?

well i think the case certainly applies for the BSD license (make the
project closed source), since it allows for that freedom.
