Kernel network performance tuning

It's been widely discussed that upping things like NMBCLUSTERS is a good
thing to do in a very busy (CPU/process wise) environment (news, http etc.)
What about a machine that's moving a bunch of packets? Is there a kernel
option/parameter to increase the number of packet buffers and related
structures like max number of simultaneous connections? How about TCB
blocks? The intended use is in a FW that's doing nothing more than ipfilter
and a little DNS.
