dropping mail in user home dirs

Can anyone give me a rough idea as to the impact of placing mail in user
home directories instead of the customary /var/mail? I realize
mail.local, /usr/bin/mail, various pop3 and imap daemons, delivery
agents, and such would likely have to be adjusted.

The recoding headache is a con. Any other big ones? How about plusses?
Any references to articles having already debated this and sundry
related issues?
