Did you mean "woes" or a pun on "whoa!"?

Anyway, I've used userland ppp(8) in the term mode to debug a modem
connection.

root@tronix > ppp
Working in interactive mode
Using interface: tun0
Warning: No default entry found in config file.
pp ON tronix> set device /dev/cua01
ppp ON tronix> set speed 115200
ppp ON tronix> term
deflink: Entering terminal mode on /dev/cua01
Type `~?' for help
atz                   /* send something to the modem */B
OK
                      /* ~. to escape */
ppp ON tronix> quit
root@tronix >

But have a look also at your dmesg(8) to make sure the serial port or
modem is actually recognised, and not conflicting with other hardware.
