Or if they haven't disabled IMAP, he can use pine directly (this is, in
fact, what I do -- I use pine to read mail for 3 different IMAP accounts).

You should (?) be able to login using samba, I think. I'm not too sure,
since I've tried to avoid Windows networks in the past. Once that is done,
you should be able to use pine regularly.
This is strictly AFAIK.
