I would say Wnn/Canna/Skk are the 3 major imput methods for Japanese
characters. Skk would not be as popular as the other two.
There are two type of Wnn. One is Wnn version 6.* which is a
commercial product and the other is Wnn 4.* which freely
distributed. Canna and Skk are free softwares.
If you could work on XEmacs port fro Japanese imput method, Wnn would
be easier just because there is already a prot for Wnn-4.2 itself. ;-)
Also, one thing that I think important is,
XEmacs-20.4 seems not show us characters other than us-ascii on tty.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
So I would be very happy if you could port XEmacs-21.1.3.
I have build couple of XEmacs'es and the result was as follows.
On a PC running OpenBSD-2.5...
with XEmacs-21.1.3 on X, I could read Japanese text.
with XEmacs-21.1.3 on tty, I could NOT read Japanese text.
with XEmacs-20.4 on X, I could read Japanese text.
with XEmacs-20.4 on tty, I could NOT read Japanese text.
On a PC running linux-2.0.36...
with XEmacs-21.1.3 on X, I could read Japanese text.
with XEmacs-21.1.3 on tty, I could read Japanese text.
with XEmacs-20.4 on X, I could read Japanese text.
with XEmacs-20.4 on tty, I could NOT read Japanese text.
JFYI, I build jvim on OpenBSD-2.5 using ports/japanese/jvim-wnn4 and I
could finally read/write Japanese on OpenBSD box, although I wish I
could do it with any version of emacs.

to read/write Japanese fluently ;-)
