it doesn't... at least not for me under linux. the only time it accesses
the cd device for me is when i actually go to use the iso to
burn a cd to disc. this is to check to see that the media is indeed
there.

xcdroast does cdrecord -scanbus to detect cd-roms. unfortunately, this
doesn't work on openbsd (or other bsd's if i recall correctly). what do
you mean by audio? when it plays a sound to indicate that an operation
is complete? i never had audio working under openbsd until now, so maybe
i can verify that and hopefully fix it.
