Re: netscape communicator crashes

Well, the first potential problem is that you are using the snapshot
based ports.tar.gz on a 3.3 machine; thats a mistake. Snapshots
are for the -current world (3.3-current), and are not guaranteed to
be compatible with previously released versions of the OS (in fact
they just about always prove to be incompatible). You need to
get ports.tar.gz from the 3.3 release directory and use that on a
stock 3.3 or 3.3-stable machine. Even if it turns out that this isn't
the problem, mixing things is not a good idea and will eventually
bite you.

The second problem is that Netscape is old and crufty in general,
and given to doing odd things. For me, it hangs when running
Java apps, randomly. Given that Netscape is not current software
any more, I don't think much can be done for it.

The third possible problem is if you are running plugins which
use Linux emulation. Version 3.3 uses Redhat 6.something
libraries; -current has recently gotten 8.0 and that has made a
difference in many things (other than Java), so you might be
experiencing problems there? I'm not sure but the rh 8.0
package might have been retrofitted for 3.3. You'll have to
check that.

All in all, I'd avoid using Netscape if possible. Opera works. I
use Mozilla mostly and that works pretty well. Konqueror too.
