The error message was probably

    Error: input: Resource temporarily unavailable

It has been reported recently on a FreeBSD list in connection
with nvi:

I know too little about the things involved here so I can't
draw any useful conclusions.  Someone in the thread mentions a
missing check for EAGAIN around a read() in common/cl_read.c...
