Re:
You haven't indicated what platform(s) we are even talking about
here...
IF we are talking about an OpenBSD dhcpd and a Windows client, check
to make sure the "computer name" is unique. I had one system recently
which just wouldn't do a DHCP, I'm suspicious of some very old Novell
client software (which I had found sometimes messed with the TCP/IP
operation) (I "hard set" this machine...wasn't worth screwing around
with). I've also found that sometimes completely removing all the
network components, rebooting, and reinstalling them can work wonders
in Windows 9x. If this is the only PC you are having problems with,
this is not an OpenBSD issue. Note that Windows does "default" to a
somewhat strange IP address under some circumstances when it can't get
a DHCP reply, but that's all it is meaning -- no dhcp reply seen.
IF we are talking about an OpenBSD dhcp client, how about giving us a
look at some config files? hostname.???, dhclient.conf, perhaps the
dhcpd.conf of the dhcpd server, and if dhcpd isn't working at all,
dhcpd.interfaces. I'm assuming that we are using an OpenBSD dhcp
server -- if this isn't accurate, again, more info is needed.
Again, depending upon the environment, if you "can't gain a network
connection", you could have cabling, NIC, hub, etc. problems. Time
for basic troubleshooting (or telling us what basic troubleshooting
you have done). Tell us why this is a DHCP problem, and not a much
more basic network problem. You can't get a DHCP request if its a
"notwork" instead of a "network". 8)
