They aren't incomprehensible if you are able to speak to him face to
face, and have some idea of the books he's been reading in oh, say,
the last few weeks.  I didn't realize there were so many people around
who still remembered him.  From your current reactions to him, it seems
you guys have mellowed out a lot over the years since his heyday.
