Because you're not telling KDE to start. Put the following two lines in
a file called .xinitrc in your home directory:
unset SHLVL
kdestart

This came up recently on the mailing-lists. Did you search the archives
before posting? Searching the monkey.org archives for "X11;dark" I see:
