is there any special reason for turning of RTS/CTS?
I mean, beside wanting to run into exactly the kind of trouble you
are experiencing?
A handshaking protocol - RTS/CTS or even XO/XOFF - is a needed.
Switching them off sometimes worked under DOS (but then again it
sometimes didn't), but is asking for trouble anywhere else.
