I had some of these same issues under 2.9 with fxp0 onboard nics. What I
finally did was to rebuild a kernel with pcibios disabled. I have since
discovered that many such kernel config changes can be done without
rebuilding the kernel at the UKC (?) prompt. I could actually
trigger the fxp0 going into a non-responsive state by sending lots of data.
