Re: Cloning OpenBSD disks

FYI:

This thread sparked alot of off-list responses for me, so I apologize if I missed anyone, and am replying to the list to let everyone know that it worked beautifully. In under two hours, I had a brand-new, fully configured webserver with all the goodies on the side...

Being used with Solaris, as soon as the machine came back up, I found myself wanting to "touch /reconfigure" or "sys-unconfig" and realized that "I wasn`t in Kansas anymore..." . Aside from manually editing /etc/hostname.le0 etc.etc.etc., doesn`t OpenBSD have something to completely wipe the box clean and start anew?

| Chuck,
|
| | Net booting.
| | I keep a solid machine with images that always work up.
| | Any of the "real" unix workstations (Sun, Alpha, SGI, Mac,
| | NeXT) can boot from the net. Good way to build machines
| | out to. The rc file can format and populate the local
| | drives if you wish.
|
| Thanks for the advice. However, I was contacted off list by someone who told me that I could simply tar-n-gzip up my filesystem and make it the "base29.tgz" for my installation. I found this to be extremely quick and simple *and* I can use my existing Solaris jumpstart machine to NFS export the base29.tgz to wherever I wish. Beautiful simplicity...
|
| | That said: how much does it cost to supports Sparc I's and
| | II's per year? Might it be worthwhile to perhaps retire
| | them? (It was costing my girlfriend's former co several
| | thousand/year to support some of their aging graphics
| | boxes. It was tracked VERY closely one quarter to suggest
| | that buying new hardware would save money.)
|
| Believe me, had I any sort of influence in purchasing decisions, we`d be having a "Sun4c Toss" event at the next company picnic. However, sometimes you just have to deal with what you`ve got and wait patiently for your chance to say "Told ya so!" That being said, If you happen to have any documentation ( hard evidence other than the obvious "It get to pick my nose for two whole days while apache compiles, all the while we`re consuming enough power to feed several third-world countries..." ) handy to help me prove this point, it would be grrrrrreatly appreciated.

I`m working with SparcI`s and SparcII`s here and don`t have the time for compilation, and installation of custom software etc. if (god forbid) a drive or two should go on me ... which has been happening ALOT around my work recently. Right now I`m doing a (VERY) basic installation, overlaying my partitions, hanging the drives off the back of another machine, mounting them and "find . | cpio -pdmv `ing" and it seems to be taking almost as long as doing a fresh install.
