Strange X/xterm bug???

I start xterms on remote hosts using this command:

ssh -n hostname xterm -geometry 80x36

note that xterm runs on the remote host, but uses the local display.
The first (and only the first) xterm I start this way on two of my
hosts lock up when doing lots of scrolling or other screen repainting
such as uncovering a hidden window. I have to destroy the window when
this happens.

I can make this happen on demand when I start an xterm on my laptop
(natted wireless connection), but it has also happened starting an xterm
on a remote sparc64 (wired, no nat). I've yet to see it happen on on my
sparc nor on any other remote host. In all cases the server is XFree86
Version 4.2.0 running on the NVIDIA RIVA TNT2.

Has anyone else seen something like this? Since it only happens once
per remote system reboot on the first xterm opened remotely it is more of
an annoyance that anything else, but still...
